Expanding the horizons - getting closer

Macro lenses and rings have their advantages. They enable us to look at things more close. Thus changing our point of view. Can look at details we haven't noticed before. Unlike pictures from high above, dayly objects are now transformed into abstract. It is a whole new field of expirience and playground of compositions and lighting.

A rather inexpencive set of lens ring makes a macro lens out of the normal ones. Enabling to reduce distance and enhance relative size of objects.

Recently I've been asked to photograph at the world famous "Orna & Ella" restaurant in Tel Aviv.
It was certainly one of the most delicious shoots I've done this year.
I especially enjoyed their "shakshuka" (eggs with vegtables) and their great Merainge desert.

‪a Jewish ritual practiced by some Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur(Day of Atonement).
The person swings a live chicken or a bundle of coins over one's head three times, symbolically transferring one's sins to the chicken or coins. The chicken is then slaughtered and donated to the poor for consumption at the pre-fast meal.‬

Rome is beautiful, old, new, romantic, sunny, classy, all of it and more.
Took my Canon 5D with a 50mm Lens, no flash. Sometimes I wished I had a wider lens, but in general I like the limitations of the fixed lens.

I went to Jeruslem Last week to shoot the food series for the Hebrew new-year feast.

with me were chef michael Katz and food stylist Snir Sharoni on these plates.

I loved the garden of the old Han theater where the restaurant is located but the sun played funny tricks on us so we constantly had to move and later shot everything inside.

The light consisted of 3 Broncolor heads with one softbox and 2 open spots. Shooting teathered with the Canon 5d MKII so everyone on the set knew what to do and how to adjust the placement of the objects in the frame.

* I now added a new segment in my website called "delicious" with various food shots I did over the past year. check it out to see some other food shots.

"um el arib - the mother of strangers" a street art project in Jaffa

I took part in a great project this weekend.
in reaction to many changes happening in the urban environment of the old city of Jaffa,
for the second year there was a call for artists to react to the theme of Jaffa, the city, the context the the urban change.
a week before I took my old 6x6 Mamiyaflex and shot 2 rolls of houses and portraits in Jaffa. link

the images were scanned and with almost no digital manipulation printed and attached to the walls of one of the houses in the street, where this took place.
On saturday there were many artists, and artists friends who came, exhibited, connected, discussed and partied with the local people to raise awareness.

It really appealed to me the easiness of this sort of exhibit in contrast to going through the tidious process of galleries and museums.

Liron turned to me for new image material.
She wanted new pictures that featured her as an actress, which meant a variety of charecters' moods etc.
When she arrived at the studio, she was very aimable and very co-operative. She managed to losen up rather quickly (as actors do) and we could let our mutual creativity just flow.

We had a make up girl but it was all tuned very fine. also, because the images did not go to a strict comercial use, we were able to maintain a clean and natural look without over-proccessing the images.

a beautiful series of real photographs taken with an old olympus pen' half frame camera.
the film gives a whole different life to the images, you just can't get that from all the snappy digital cameras.

because you can't set anything but composition in this camera, there's a lot left to chance, and clicking at the right moment.

That's kind of my definition to photo-magic.
Sometimes you just have to leave all the technology and know-how behind, and just make pictures.

The images from the shot with actress Hilla Vidor were spectacular.

Her agency loved them and I hope you will too.
We worked on a few defenitive looks and concepts going toward glamour and beauty.
Beeing an actress made it easy for her to slip into different characters for the camera.
She really gives herself to the images.

The lighting was pretty basic, mostly single light bare flashes, white background.

Our shooting, though essentially with a clear concept, touched different characters

once, she was the femme fatale, other times the quiete beauty, a tough lady etc.

after months of searching, I finaly moved into a new location.
I do not claim that working from home doens't have pros,
but I always believed in a healthy separation between life and work.

So after months of searching and negotiatians I have settled in a nice bright industrial
space among some industrial and office buildings.
Ordered some new furnitures, installed a phone line and internet and I am good to go.

I know there's a lot of hard work a head of me. Convincing the right people
to work with me, to use my skills and my location to achieve the best results.

But I have done this before, so I pretty much have an idea of what is a head...

this time we shot in a beautiful reservoir near the seashore.
every student got a measured time with the model to implement his/her idea.

I asked the student to bring reference pictures and to sketch the scene so they would be best prepared and use their time to the best.

by shooting individually we could avoid casting each other's shadows in the scene or disturbing background. The model worked very well and free for 3 hours.

People came with excellent ideas and executed them very well.
We used golden reflectors, Flashes with umbrellas and a lot of direct harsh sunlight.

getting early to a location has it's benefits ...

getting to a location way a head of your clients gives you an opportunitiy to shoot some images for yourself.
May it be architecture, portrait or scenary, it a good time to shoot and look arround.

I find it beneficial in many ways, I'm already "on the clock" which means I am going to get paid,
I am doing things that are interesting to me, and if I am lucky, by the time the client gets there, he finds me shooting and working.
when I get to a location, everything is interesting, the people, the light, the architecture, nobody is uninteresting.
That allows me to combine the "bread and butter" with the soul food.
and I have fun doing it.

A while ago I shot a movie production on the set. I loved shooting the crew setting up gear, the actors getting into character and envisioning a scene.

I accompanied them in 2 different locations. Got some beautiful shots, some got went as a cover for the PR print.

As it happens, the whole movie was revised. They had to drop a lot of scenes and reshoot new ones on a new location. The movie is nominated for an important Film prize in Cannes.

So a new Poster image had to be shot.

so yesterday we drove to the last location and worked on an image that could best represent the new movie.

It was again an interesting process only this time I wasn't really shooting on the "set", I had the actors all to myself so we could focus much better on a certain image and atmosphere.

It was a beautiful setting and the natural light became more and more attractive, but I decided to emphasize the ambient light with some fill flash held by a voice activated tripod (the make up artist).

on some images it provided exactly the right "push" to change it from a nice flat image to a more dramatic picture.

The set was shot with my 5D MK II with the Canon 580EX Flash and a Nikon SB800 in Slave mode on about 1/4 power.

sometimes it's a good exercise to limit yourself.

I went out with the canon 5d with the 50mm and no flash on it

crancked the ISO to 1600 and just shot a head, no tripod, no mission.

came with some interesting results, shooting with available night-light.

in the city you've got plenty of spotlights that will give you studio like light

free of charge ...

this was shot using available light only and iso 1600 on the canon D5 with a 50mm/1.8 mounted

you can't really beat old school street photography, especially in medium format

here's a blog I discovered just now that will really make you want to take hold

of your grandmother's old "Rolley"and just go snapping pictures in the next street corner.

(there's no such thing as snapping with these old heavy cams)

vintage collection

yesterday we shot a vintage collection.

it was a basic set up - single light with a big umbrella.

Styling was done by Ifat, model was Avigail

we kept it clean and simple.

The goal was to show the clothes, the fabric and how they should be worn.

So we were able to shot as many as 20 items in a very short period of time, while maintaining the necessary quality.

I especially liked the more detailed shots of the fabric.

Yesterday, while waiting for clients to arrive

I saw they were hanging works of art in a nearby gallery.

I went in and was really impressed with the works of sculptures featured.

something very expressive, familiar and powerfull about them.

I've spoken to the artist, who originally came from the wild north of the argentinian amazonas.

His work, mainly based upon his memories from the region

portraits the Indigenous people of the area and the wars about the Rainforest there.

with his permission, I shot it in daylight, canon 5d with the lovely 50mm glass on it
which gave me this beautiful narrow depth of field, isolating the sculptures from the background.

I was asked to shoot an artist in his new gallery.

He's featuring his work and his study in the same room in the old city of Jaffa (next to tel aviv)

I wanted to use available light as much as possible, but for some reason, he liked to use white florocent tubes for the study.

so I ended up using my camera Flashes as a fill.

I used my Canon 5D MK II with the L-Glass, with the EX580 as a strobe.

I still have my old Mamiyaflex back from my photography early days.
In art school, we had to learn the basics. We started by building a "camera obscura" - basically a cardboard box with a tiny hole in it and some photo paper on the inside ...

then we progressed in the first year, shooting black and white film with these gigantic, heavy, manual medium format cameras.

Theidea was to really learn how to measure light (extern light meter) ,

manage focus (change the distance between the lens and the film) and plan a composition upon the huge 6 by 6 prisma (which turned left and right around)

My camera, which I found in an old photography store was build sometimes in the early 1960's.

It is still great to shoot with. you get a sense of depth and quality you can't enjoy with a new digital camera even if you put all the megapixels you want on it. (my new 5d MK II has 21)

I can't see a commercial use for it, so I can save it for my own enjoyment and experiments.

another children's shoot

this time it was fast paced 30 kids shoot.

the client was a children's model agency who represents kids from infants through teenagers

each kid got a number and a few minutes to shine in front of the camera.

Although I have expirience both in children's portrait as working in a professional enviroment

it was very interesting for me to see one of the industry's top "child trainer" in action.

within minutes he had even the most restless infant focused and happy and curious for the shoot.

I had my brother Tal as an assistant, he helped me with the gear and during the shoot.

As a film major he has great understanding of the process.

The lighting set up was basic and effective. Two spots gave an evenly lit background

and one big umbrella provided the key-light and a nice fill from the front.

I love the catchlight of it.

I know it is supposed to be a tool left by many behind in the 70's, but I prefer it to softboxes which give very shallow light.

some of the kids had breathtaking expressions and camera openness that gave the work the right "touch"

I took with me 2 sets of my broncolor and a foba fold out background set.

Oneof the more challenging subjects to shoot are business portraits.

You only have a few moments of the CEO's time and you have to make an image with the right impact. It has to project this person's personality, mix it with confindence and self assurance yet friendly and inviting. All in the same image.

Sometimes you can only shoot them in their office, so you have to travel light and make do with very little available light and some small flashes .

But I do like this theme very much. It is always interesting to meet new people and addapt quickly to their personalities .

Today's assignment was to shoot a lecturer, a presenter.

The Image was to portrait him in "action" he wanted the dynamic of him speaking in front of a crowd to be recaptured in the studio.

This meant combining the perfection and "lab-situation" of the studio, with field gestures and energies.

We tried different approaches of spontaneous and staged performances.

We ended up combining both techniques with interesting results.

nude workshop on the beach

yesterday was the second meet up with the group.

It's a big photography school that had me do this 3 day workshop for nude.

day one was theory and studio work with a model.

yesterday we met at the beach, sat with the folks for some drinks and explained some more theory, took the time to answer some Q's

the model arrived and we found a nice spot to start shooting.

the challenges were working with difficult light, tough ground (sandy hills that collapsed under our feet) and people passing by.

all in all, I think people enjoyed it and came to interesting results.

location scouting for the workshop

I have a workshop this week.

we've discussed a few options for the out-door location

one of them was the cliff just out side of herzelia.

So I went for a quick scout and fell in love with the stone structure and forms.

I saw many potential places for a shoot.

depending on the weather, it started to rain, just as I was returning to Tel Aviv.

lets hope the sun will grant us a bit of it's rays, I wish for a cloudy without rain-weather.

this week was very interesting to me.

I saw some fine art, photo work and photo-equipment.

in the secret art opening there was a beautiful variety of known and unknown artist, great ambience and interesting crowd.

from there, we went to the world press photo opening with some inspirational pieces.

I especially liked the sports photography, that is just art work.

today it went to a different direction, in an exhibition that presented the newest from canon, epson and profoto, I got to play with dream cameras such as the mamyia, the new canon Mark 4 the D7 and others .

a company that produces excellent reproduction and fine art prints.

It's good and refreshing to meet other photographers and people of the trade.
